Presenter(s): Satyan Lakshminrusimha, MD, FAAP; Jessica Meneses Jones, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC, C-NNIC
Description: In the US, the birthrate is rapidly decreasing. This has a marked impact on neonatal admissions to NICU. However, advancing maternal age and increasing resuscitation of extremely preterm infants at the borderline of viability is changing the complexity and chronicity of NICU patients. With reduced NICU rotations among pediatric residents, and changes in billing for critical care services, the role of NNPs is evolving. This review outlines the critical role NNPs play in the evolution of neonatal critical care in the US. (1.5 CEU)

Presenter(s): Zachary Vesoulis, MD, MSCI
Description: This presentation explores the evolution of neonatal oxygenation monitoring from basic pulse oximetry to advanced near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), with special focus on detecting "silent hypoxia" events that traditional monitoring misses. We'll examine how these technologies are revolutionizing our understanding of cerebral autoregulation and brain oxygenation in vulnerable NICU patients, and how evidence-based monitoring strategies can potentially reduce brain injury rates and improve neurological outcomes in preterm and critically ill infants. (1.5 CEU)
