In the US, the birthrate is rapidly decreasing. This has a marked impact on neonatal admissions to NICU. However, advancing maternal age and increasing resuscitation of extremely preterm infants at the borderline of viability is changing the complexity and chronicity of NICU patients. With reduced NICU rotations among pediatric residents, and changes in billing for critical care services, the role of NNPs is evolving. This review outlines the critical role NNPs play in the evolution of neonatal critical care in the US. (1.5 CEU)
