Tricia Lacy Gomella MD

Dr. Tricia Gomella completed Medical School and Pediatrics Residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. The first part of her Neonatology Fellowship at UK was under the direction of Dr. Doug Cunningham. She then completed her Neonatology Fellowship training at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in 1988 under Drs. Doug Jones and Fabian Eyal. She has had a faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since that time and is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Part Time.

Dr. Gomella is the founding editor of the Lange Clinical Manual of Neonatology, first published in 1988. The 25th Silver Anniversary edition of the manual was published in 2013. The latest 8th edition was published in 2020 and has been named in her honor as "Gomella's Neonatology". The manual has gained a wide following in the US and abroad. Various editions of the book have been published in 13 languages including: Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese (both short and long form), Turkish, Greek, Yugoslavian (Serbian), Romanian, Hungarian, Italian and Korean. Over the years Drs. Doug Cunningham and Fabian Eyal have served as Associate Editors.

The original concept of the "On-Call Problem" was created by Dr. Gomella during her fellowship at the University of Kentucky and can be traced back to the first edition of Neonatology published in 1988. This "On-Call" concept of approaching patient problems in an organized fashion has since been replicated in dozens of other books in various medical specialties.

Dr. Gomella's professional focus has been to contribute not only in the field of Neonatology but in the editorial leadership in many other medical books for students, residents and practicing physicians. Her manual has been cited as the number one Neonatology book by Book Authority (bookauthority.org) out of 42 Neonatology books listed. It was recently recognized as the number one book in Book Authority( https://bookauthority.org /books/best-neonatology-books) in the list of the best neonatology books of all time. Three editions have been recognized in the top 10 selling Neonatology books with the 4th edition rated as the top selling neonatology book on record. The manual consistently receives 5 Star reviews on Amazon.
