Alfonso Vargas MD

After serving as a Neonatologist with the United States Air Force for the first five years of his career, Dr. Vargas took a position with Pediatrix Medical Group as a Neonatologist in the Tampa Practice, where he has been since 2011.

He served as Medical Director of the Newborn Hospitalist Program, Co-Medical Director of the St. Joseph's Women's Hospital Level IV NICU, and Medical Director of the Mease Countryside Hospital Level III NICU prior to assuming the role of Practice Medical Director in 2022.

In his current role Dr. Vargas provides direct oversight for a busy group of 16 Neonatologists, 15 Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and 5 Pediatricians. He directs the operation of six Newborn Intensive Care Units in the Baycare Health System of Tampa Bay.

Dr Vargus helps lead protocol and guideline development for their group, participates in numerous Quality Improvement projects and serves as direct liaison for the group with hospital administration.

For the past thirteen years he has been the director of the Newborn Therapeutic Hypothermia Program – where his true passion lies. In that role he provides oversight for the development and ongoing maintenance of a cooling program that serves a hospital with over six thousand deliveries per year and over one thousand NICU admissions per year.

At the state level, Dr. Vargas is on the Board of Directors of the Florida Neonatal Neurologic Network whose mission is to provide state-of-the-art care for newborn babies with brain injuries and to collect research and develop future therapies to improve long-term outcomes.
